Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Firstly you need to make network cards are updated as in there drives and make sure they are installed properly.
Now you did not state wether the laptop would be connected via wirless to a main computer wich already has a wireless router or not?

If this is the case you need to then only open network connections on the laptop.

If the wireless network has a name and password you will need to use them.

You will have to go to main computer and set the wireless network to allow access for other users on the network.

I have a belkin54 router attached to my pc. Since reinstalling xp on the laptop I no longer have a wireless adapter icon in my networks. I haven't got any of the orginal cds that came with this laptop - do I have to download drivers?? (a little knowledge is obviously a dangerous thing!!) I have tried to follow the wizards for setting up a wireless network but am scuppered when it asks me to insert the flash drive into the router as the router doesn't have a usb port! I wish I had never started!!

Check in device manager it maybe under other devices?
Click start scroll to my computer click on my computer properties and open.
click on hardware tab then device manager
See if there are any yellow symbols
This means they need drivers

Also what is make and model of laptop as the manufacturers web site should have the driver download files for the laptop make n model.
However just downloading and running the drives does not mean they automaticaly install, you would have to go to device manager and manualy install them.

Its is usaly the case to reinstall drivers after a fresh install,it maybe a good idea for the future to save the origonal drivers to disk incase needed for the future.

There maybe a few update drivers listed for your model of laptop.

Hey a fresh install does a computer/laptop good.
