Smile [Fixed]Router Problem - Help !!

Hello,

Its my first post here - have looked through other posts to avoid duplication but can't really see any that are exactly the same mine in terms of problems.

I keep losing my broadband connection ever since i plugged the DSL modem into a router - its never happened prior to buying the router.

I'm trying to get the wireless broadband on top a laptop - and it DID work initially, but now the green internet light on the router goes out whenever it feels like it - sometimes 2 mins, other times 30 mins, other times after a few hours.

When the router internet light goes out, i lose internet connection on my PC plus also to the laptop to which it is transmitting wirelessly. The only way i get it back on is to unplug the cable modem, unplug the router and reboot everything - which is a real pain in the neck.

Can anyone offer any potential advice? Many thanks.

What wirless router are you also using?
Did you encrypt it when you installed it?Encryption is a passowrd of 4-10 didgets or letters?

Cheers Jelly Bean, i appreciate your response.

The router i bought was a DSL router from Asda for £34.99.

It has WAN, LAN and 4 other ports on the back - and green lights. The middle light is the internet light, which keeps going off all the time.

Did i encrypt it? If by that you mean did i give it a new password, then No. The default password in the configuration screen was to leave it blank and press enter, so being lazy i did just that.

Hope this makes sense.
D

Yes it makes sense.Ok the status light always binkers on and off.power, lan and wan should stay on.Numbered ones will blinker on and off also.
You need to set your own password on the wirelss router as the one that is on now maybe bypassed and anyone living near you can connect to your wireless connection.
Is it actualy Asda make or another?
Did the dropping of connection happen before you got the router or only occured after you setup router?

Hi Jelly Bean,

There are 5 lights and all stay on apart from the 'internet' light. At first all 5 are on, but after a few minutes the internet light goes off and there is no connection.

I will set my own password tonight. It isnt an Asda make, its their brand, in their packaging, but i've been told its made by Belkin FOR Asda, in a cheaper casing to keep the costs down.

The connection worked 100% on always - prior to me buying the router. The problem has just arisen since i put the router in.

Thanks

Ha ha soap watcher, lol.save the links. Please encrypt the router or others will connect to your network.Virgin BB is poor and the buisier the net is in your area the speed of our service goes down.
Here test your speed upload and download Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Roll on the free upgrade we may get a decent speed.

I hope it all goes well and please come back and let us know how you get on.Thankyou.

i think its cured now jelly baby, ive had constant connection for about 16 hours. removed mcafee from my system, gave my router a new password and also moved my router further away from my cordless telephone, which may have been interferring with it.

thanks for your help
damian
