Default Wireless router newbie

Im getting a wireless router soon and never used one before.... ill have three things i nede to hook to it.. my pc my laptop and my playstation.. my question is how many and what extra thing will i have to buy to hook all thos eup since im guessing it wont come with enough for all 3 right out the box.. for istance with my wired router if im not mistaken it only came with 1 ethernet cable so i had to buuy a second to hook up my second device to it.. what would i need for the wireless one? edit: or better yet would it be cheaper to buy a router that support both wired abnd wireless and just keep my playstation and pc hooked up with wires and use wireless for my laptop.. since the whole reason im considering getting wireless is soley for the laptop anyway... if that snot possible then is it possible to hook a wired router up to a wireless? (i doubt it)

You can connect a wired to wireless via the LAN connector on the back.
If I were you, I would get a Linksys WRT54G Series.
Other items you may need would be a wireless pcmcia card if the laptop does not have onboard. wireless
You will also need that extra CAT5 cable for 1 of the other devices.

does teh wireless router have the LAN thing to hook the wired router up to it? cause i dont see a LAN thing in teh back of my wired router... also what how would my pc laptop and playstation (if i decided to go all wireless) send signals to teh wireless isnt theer something (for example) that i would stick in the ethernet hole on my playstation modem that acts as an "antenna" that sends signlat too and from teh router?.. if so does teh router come with one and since id have 3 items to hook up then id have to just buy 2 (since teh routher would come with one)?

Hi there!

The "LAN thing" is just an ethernet port that you just use cat5 cable to connect to.

If you wanted to go wireless with the PS2 you would have to buy a wireless to wired bridge like the D-Link Airplus Xtreme (if I recall) and that connects to the wired ethernet port in your ps2.

The only things you will need to connect all computers over wireless are: 3 wireless capable devices if they are not wireless capable you need a compatible adapter such as the wireless to wired bridge I detailed above (Any of the above devices but the only way for PS 2), a PCMCIA wireless card for the laptop and a PCI card for the desktop.

The only things you will need to go all wired is the router and 3 ethernet cables and the router.

Hope this clears things up for ya.

well i just looked up D-Link Airplus Xtreme and by looking at the picture it indeed has an antenna but i dont see anyway (by looking at it) that that would go in my ps2.. however since my pc and ps2 are hooked up to my (wired) router just fine and i can hook up a wireless router to a wired router using the LAN port then i think imam just used teh wireless for teh laptop and continue to use the wired for teh rest. is a PCMIA card pretty much standard issue with most laptops these days (Im bgetting oen of the newer Acer Ferrari models with Vista)?

You don't need both a wired router and wireless, wireless routers generally have 4+ wired ports on the rear.

The Ferrari does have wireless built in, you will not need an extra card.

Not to question your personal preferences but why the Ferrari? It's a very good laptop but alot of what you pay for is the silly carbon stuck on it and the Ferrari logo, you can get a much better spec notebook without that and it's more subtle.
