Default Why does it say 'Not Connected' when connected??

Hi, please help!

I have a cable modem sent to us via virgin media. I have linked this to a Belkin wireless router. When I connect to the wireless router, 99percent of the time, the wireless network connections window will say 'not connected' for that network, although I am using it to as internet access.... so why does it still say not connected? I'm assuming that the fact that nearly always, it properly disconnects and connects to another network after about 5 mins has something to do with the same problem?? I then can power up the hardware again and repeat the same 5 min cycle of using my own internet connection! is it the service provider, the modem or the router???

Thanks
