Question [Answered] Wired/Wireless network and shared printer.

Im attempting to share a printer connected to a my pc that is NOT wireless; but is connected via ethernet cord to my wireless router.

Ive ran the shared network setup and i still cannot get our laptop (wireless, using same router) To print from the printer.

Any suggestions?

Note: I can't get the laptop to join the mshome network that i set up on the pc.

Default Re: Wired/Wireless network and shared printer.

Hi NostalgicStone, welcome to PCHF. I think your going about this all wrong

The first thing you need to do is find out the IP address of the printer by printing a test page from the printer itself. Some printers are able are able to print out test pages by simply holding down the "Go" or "Feed" butons for a number of seconds. Some, like the HP Laserjet 1200/1300's printers have a tiny microswitch at the back of the printer, right next to where the network cable plugs into.

Once you find out the IP address of the printer, normally 192.168.1.something, it's best to set that IP address to a "static address", so that it does not become reassigned a new address when you switch off your router, or leave your printer off for a while. To do this, type in the printers address into your internet explorer bar to bring up the settings page of the printer. Access your network properties and tick the "Manual" instead of "DHCP" option, and assign it an address 192.168.1.200.

Once your printer has been assigned a static address and the printer driver is installed, right click on the printer and go to Properties. Click on the Ports tab, followed by Add Port. Click on the "Standard TCP/IP Port" type, followed by New Port. Click next on the wizard, and type in the new IP address of the printer, and follow the wizard to the end. Close and Apply those changes.

These instructions vary between printer to printer, so if you would like more specific instructions for your particular model of printer, please let us know.

EDIT: Marked as answered.
