Default [Pending] Wireless Networking Help??

Hi my name is Daniel Lowery and i am new to this forum,

i am a complete novice when it comes to wireless networking but am hoping to learn somethings from it so if anyone could help would be a big hand ...

I own a PC (desktop) and am on a N*L Broadband package (non wireless yet)...

I recently purchased a laptop off ebay and it came with a wireless PCMCIA card...

So i want to go wireless...

So the laptop has wireless already set up on it i want to be able to set the rest up so it can access m network connection and internet...

i wish to be able to access files on my other PC (not wireless yet, PC mentioned above) and this is the PC i have my N*L modem plugged into ...

If i want to be able to share the files and internet connection with the laptop through wireless can i just purchase a usb wi-fi stick off ebay or do i have to buy a router ??

Thanks.
Daniel Lowery

There are several approaches you can take to achieve this.

1. Purchase a Wireless Access Point (WAP) and appropriate wi-fi cards for each machine you want to have connected together.

2. Replace the NTL modem with a wireless router that will work with their setup (you didn't say if you were cable or plain DSL)

3. Purchase wi-fi cards that are capable of doing point to point communications or at least one end needs to act as a WAP.

No.2 ....We Are cable and i would actually prefer to keep my modem as i reli on it more (sorry for my bad spelling)...

No.3.... If i purchased Wi-Fi cards do u mean one that would be able to plug into the desktop pc as i am not looking to buying another ??

The laptop came with a Wi-Fi card i will explain the details of it...

Name: SS-Lan Card, MN128, NTT-ME, Wi-Fi <<((these are the details wrote on the card))

The serial number is ... -Removed for security purposes-

And it also has ...NYCA0046 And D00-0948JP And WLC010-D53 wrote on the back

Note:
Hey, Lowery. What you thought was the serial number is actually the MAC address. This is a number unique to your card and isn't a good idea to share with anybody except your ISP or the company providing the piece of hardware.

Hello, welcome to PCHF!

You're going to need to get a wireless router in order for your laptop to access the internet or the network.

Once you get one, you're going to need to take the ethernet cable currently linking your modem with your computer, unplug it from the computer, and plug it into the "Internet" or "Ethernet" port on your router. The router should have come with another ethernet cable. Plug one end of this into one of the "PC" ports in the router, and the other end into the slot you unplugged the other cable from. Now you can install the router's drivers and software, and configure the router (most of that procedure is fairly simple and should be covered in the router's manual). Now the router is wired to your PC, so you can connect to the internet as well as with your laptop.

Now, make sure the laptop can access the internet through your router.

Once you've gotten through this, as it's a lot to do, post back if anything went wrong or with confirmation that everything went successfully and I'll go on to actually setting up the network, which is a tad bit more complicated.
