Question [Answered] My noob questions regarding WLAN and routers

hello, im completely new to this wireless feature, and got DSL as well as a wireless router yesterday.

so instead of polluting the forum with seperate threads for each question I will post all of them here.

k first of all my router is Belkin F5D7630-4B.

I have 2 laptops with WLAN's or Wi-Fi's (I dont know the difference) and I also own a nokia e-61 which also has WLAN or WI-Fi.

k first of all i want to protect myself from phishing (i think this is what is called) by putting a password on my WLAN.

i read on another thread and went to 192.168.2.1 went to>>security and selected 128 bit WEP, I did not choose WPA cause im not sure if my e61 supports WPA.

after that i got a screen which I am attaching here, dont know where to go from here? HELP!

Hi,

Simply enter a passphrase in the bottom then hit "Generate". Make a note of all of the numbers and letters generated in the boxes, in order...so your eventual WEP key should be 26 digits/letters. Copy the WEP key to notepad and click on apply in that window.

You will now be disconnected from your router but when you re-connect, you will be prompted for the key you have carefully copied down. Copy and paste the key and you are securely connected to your router

Yes and infact, WPA is a stronger encryption - so recommended.

Wi-Fi is the general term used to describe anything relating to wireless networking and computers/IT, where as, WLAN is simply an acronymn for Wireless Local Area Network.

Hello me again

ok now let me explain me setup.

as I explained earlier I have a Belkin router the model number is posted above, now 2 new additions are an hp 530 laptop, wjich has a built in WLAN, and an acer travelmate 2410, the acer did not have a built in WLAN so I bought a PCMCIA card for it, which is -Link Wireless G Notebook Adapter DWL - G630.

ok now that you guys jnow what hardware I have , now i can ask questions:

first off i have bought all these so that I can connect to my Belkin router for DSL access.

K but can I connect the two laptops with each other for file and printer sharing as well as for network gaming? if yes then how do i set em up?

First of all make sure that both of the PCs are connecting to the router/internet. If they are then they are already on a wireless LAN. They will have the same network details, such as IP address and subnet mask. Next you need to decide what you need to share and then set up folders so that they can be "seen" by each PC on the network.

I have to be honest, we haven't yet written a guide for this so your best bet is to google for info. We will be writing various guides in the future and this would be an excellent addition.

how to set up a wireless lan - Google Search

xp folder sharing - Google Search

set up a gaming lan - Google Search
