Default [Resolved] Wireless help

Hi guys.
I have recently purchased a restored laptop, and have installed a Belkin wireless adaptor to connect to the orange live box. According to belkins own wireless monitor, it is connected to the wireless router, which is fine. It is when it then tries to connect to the internet that I have the problem. Although it connects most of the time (i am sending this from my laptop!), it has an annoying habit of intermitantly disconnecting, and as such, if I try to load a page at the wrong time, it tells me that the server cannot be reached, because the connection is not there. Any ideas as to why this is would be much appreciated.
Secondly, I am having a real problem with the range and strength of the signal. The router is in the study, and I often use my laptop in my bedroom. the signal is listed as being 'very low'. I assume that this is due to the walls of the house, but any ideas of how to improve the signal?

Cheers guys,
Ed

Now, let me time this correctly so it loads first time...and submit!

Hello rogerse,

Welcome to PCHF.

I think you have answered your own question here. If your signal strength is low, it would explain why you are having intermitent connection issues.

Try to make sure that the router is somewhere centralised in the house, based on where all your wireless devices are located in the house, even if it means you need to purchase longer network and telephone cables. In addition, there are devices that can help increase the range of your wireless router. For example: D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G710 Wireless Range Extender (DWL-G710/B)

cheers madmonkey.

your right, when I am close to the router, the problem tends to go. The odd thing with it is that it is saying its connected to the router (built into the live box), but the internet side is connecting intermitantly. This happens even when I am stood next to the router! it does then settle down somewhat.

I will look into re-locating the router to a more central location.

Thanks also for your welcome...
Thanks again
Ed

Hey Ed, you have problems when connected with a strong signal too?

Have you tried connecting via an ethernet cable directly into the router? To be connected to a router requires little information, but much more is required for internet access. It could be that not all the information is being received. This is known as packet loss.

If your still having problems with a wired connection, it will help to determine where the problem lies. Are there any other PC's, laptops or games consoles in your house? Do they connect wirelessly too?
