Default Wireless Connection Problems (obviously)

Ok so I'm new to these boards so first off "Hello" to anyone reading.

Now with my problem that has me completely stumped. I will try to explain what is exactly wrong so hopefully someone can give me an answer or at least point me in the right direction.

Ok well I was running XP Pro SP1 but I had to format. Installed XP Pro SP2 and such. I then noticed that my wireless internet wouldn't connect . I figured, "No problem, probably something that I could easily fix." Wrong. So I have SBC DSL, the 2 Wire package paired with a Motorola WPC1810G wireless card in my desktop. I installed the latest drivers, tried the Motorola and Windows wireless connection clients and still I couldn't get a signal. I then left my comp on for a little while and then suddently I got a connection. Hurray. Wrong. While I was connected to my modem, I didnt have access to the internet for some reason. It's weird because, sometimes this is the case and others it isn't. Sometimes the connection is fine and I browse like normal. Eventually though, the connection will drop from 11 mbps to 5.5 down to 1 and then die.

I know it isnt my modem that is the problem because I am typing this from my laptop, situated right next to my desktop, using a wireless connection. That leaves me to think it is an issue with my desktop. I tried moving the modem right next to my desktop but it didn't change anything so I just moved it back to its original location in the other room. I have played around with all the settings I can think of but can't seem to get anything to change. Everything worked fine before my switch to SP2, any got any suggestions?

Hello there Keyten and welcome to PCHF,

It sounds like it is a software related problem or maybe something to do with your wireless card.

I know you said you have updated your drivers but could you try updating the motorola's drivers to version 6.1.1 from the following site:
http://broadband.motorola.com/consum...alsAccessories

Once you have done that let us know if it has helped at all.

Thanks for the quick reply Zimbo. I am currently using those drivers though. I uninstalled the wireless card from my device manager and reinstalled using the 6.1.1 drivers. Any other suggestions?

  • Do you have any firewalls/antivirus software installed on your machine?
If not then try disabling the windows firewall and see if that makes any difference, alternatively follow 'Prework' in my signature and run the ewido and hijackthis scan and post the appropriate logs for us.

Hello,
just in case, try to check if you have the SSID broadcast on. As some routers allows you to hide your network.

Also make sure you have entered the correct WEP key to your network (if its a protected one)

I had the same problem in my other desktop running WinXP Pro. I am running a Linksys Wireless Router, connected to my DSL. I just set up my wireless system on my PC with the Linksys Installation CD and it worked perfectly ever since. (First I hardwired the PC to the Router, and followed the directions on the CD, then did the installation of the wireless side of the system). It worked the first time. Hope this helps.

Hi Keyten

Have you managed to try any of these suggestions?

If so let us know if you've had any joy or if you're still stuck
