Default [Fixed] need help with wireless g usb network adapter

hi all,
i have a laptop hooked up to my wireless router via wifi and my desktop hooked up by cable, been going well for almost a year now. today i brought a wireless g usb network adapter for another pc so i could network play some games with freinds. i used the same key and channel as my laptop, but even though it say it has connected to my router i can not get into my routers home page and next to the net it has an x. also when connected the cpu jumps to 100%, and when i pull the usb out the cpu goes back to normal. can i use the same key and channel as my laptop or do i need a diff one. and can anyone think off what the problem might be.

thankyou for your time

Quick question, is the adapter a Belkin one by any chance? The reason I ask this is that there is a known fault with a service that Belkin use (WinXPDisableZeroConfiguration) - causing the type of CPU hikes that you are describing.

I KNEW IT!!

Well, we could go thru a whole load of attempted fixes and suggested work arounds for this (REALLY) annoying problem....or you could buy another adapter (Linksys/Netgear etc) that doesn't have the same problem

The choice..as they say, is yours bud

the annoying thing was i brought this from the ****py pc world on a whime because i have used belkin products before. and as you may or may not know pc world does not allow you to return products. took me 2 hrs off screaming at them to replace my bugged laptop when i brought it from them. and that was in 18 days off me having it. so if if isn't too much of a hassle i would like to try a work around though it will have to be after work tom that i try it.

thanks again for the quick reply, hope it wont be to much hassle for you to explain what to do.
i have to say i have no experiance with wireless other then my laptop. and that was a simple case of inputting the keyname etc.. and i was away.

Article 17 of the PC World returns policy states
17. If you change your mind we may take goods back at our discretion if they are unopened, unused and in perfect condition.
So...if you package up the adapter and return it with a smile then according to your rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and their own returns policy then they would be very silly not to exchange your item. You could even mention this site if you like

hi,
managed to swap the belkin for a net gear wireless usb 2.0 adapter. when it finished installing it said i needed xp hotfix kb822603, so i d/l and installed it but i still said i needed it. when i plugged the adapter in i am still getting the same problem. says i am connected but will not load a page or my routers home. one good thing the cpu is at normal useage so that is cool. any thoughts on what is wrong.

thanks
