Default Can't access desktop through my laptop...

But i can access my laptop through my desktop...even though under the my network places, on the desktop, there shows two folders..one which i can access which has my laptop's files....and one which i also can access which is meant to be for sharing my desktop's files.

On the laptop, however, on the my network places..i can only see the shared document folder for the laptop; the desktop isnt showing up. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

You simply need to enable your desktop file to be shared, to do this simply right click your desktop file which is located in c:/documents and setting/yourname/desktop, select properties, then sharing, then tick the checkbox next to share this folder on the network, select the box to allow network users to change my files if you want to be able to, then press o.k, the desktop folder should now be shown in your network places. thx dave

Cool...done that, isnt working yet, but it seems to be a step in the right direction.

Under my network places on this laptop, there is still just the shared documents folder for this laptop only..however, when i go to add a new network place,----> under "mshome" (name of my network, i now see the name of my desktop computer (Jimmy)...here is the problem, i cant add it as a net work place.- the Ok button greys out....any other further steps to take?

Thanks for your help so far,

James

EDIT: In my first post, when i say "desktop", i mean "desktop PC".

One other error message worth noting:

On this laptop, i go to

My network places
View workgroup computers

and i see my laptop there along with my desktop PC (jimmy)..however, when i double click my desktop PC (jimmy)..i get this error message:

\\Jimmy is not accessable. You might not have persmission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

Any ideas? I must be close to fixing this problem.

Hi again, Are both computers set to the same workgroup?? try going to my network places and on the left hand side there should be a link that says set up home or small office network, click that and follow the onscreen instructions, make sure that when you get to the workgroup name that you type the same on both computers, e.g mshome. try that and let me know. after you have done that restart both computer. If that doesnt work you might not have file sharing enabled, to do this go to My network places, click view network connections, right click youre connection and click properties, under the general tab make sure that the file and printer sharing checkbox is ticked, also on the authentication tab that the authenticate as computer when computer information is available has the checkbox ticked. Do this to both computers and restart. try that and let me know thx dave

Hi,
Thanks for your response again. Well when i was looking at my laptop last night, i found that it was part of a different workgroup somehow..i must have been fiddling around with the settings...so i set it to the same workgroup as my desktop PC, but it still didnt work.

Anyway, i tried what you suggested...i set up a new network "FIRSTNETWORK".....restarted both computers...still not working.

When i view the work group computers on my laptop, this laptop, and my computer, both come up....and it is still coming up with the error message as before when i try to access my desktop PC.

However, on my desktop PC, when i view the workgroup computers...it only comes up with my desktop PC on there...ie- it doesnt show that my laptop is part of the workgroup. I dont see how this is possible as i just went through the wizard, typing the same name "FIRSTNETWORK''...etc..and going through all the steps.

I then checked everything you told me to, and everything seems to be fine in those areas.
