Default Wireless Range Extender

I have a Wireless-G Card from Linksys. To tell you the truth, it sucks. I dont know if anyone else has this problem, but the antenna doesnt stay on at all, and I cant seem to get a good signal even with it on. My router is maybe 40 feet away, just a few rooms down the hall, and yet I can never get signal strength unless I completely turn my computer around so that the back is facing outwards (towards the router). I tried to buy a high gain antenna, but that made the signal worse. So, do I go for Pre-N, or do I buy a range extender? Or, do I buy a different company's G Adapter and see.

Thanks a ton,
Connor707

Hi there,
I myself use a linksys router and a linksys 54G card and works flawlessly (cept for sudden dips sometimes). What you want to do is:
- Check if antenae is fully screwed in
- Make sure drivers are fully updated (check www.linksys.com)
- Check if you're running the same type of network, (G, B,...)
- Check the security settings, WPA means better protection but slower connection, I personaly use TKIP
- Play around with the antenae, put it in different positons
- Check thickness of walls or any objects that might block the signal (metal objects would be a major impasse here)

Cheers

i do believe thier effective range is around 30 feet, depending on walls and whatever is inbetween. a range extender will definatly help you out.

try changing channels, and diferent antenna positions. the antenna should definatly screw on tight, make sure you didnt crossthread it, and screw up the threads.

also, router shouldnt be next to a computer monitor/tv, or any other wireless broadcasting devices if you can help it.

but i definatly think a range extender placed about halfway inbetween router and wireless card will help you out, i have linksys products, and have always had good luck with them. they have excelent tech support available on thier site, i use the instant chat with them, and they, unlike most tech support, are extremely helpfull and knowledgable and will go above and beyond the call of duty to answer your questions. I have never had them not resovle an issue for me, wheras when ive used microsofts tech support, they are morons and shouldnt even be allowed to talk to other people. used them 3 times, and all three could hardly speak english, and knew less about computers than i did. tried to tell me that when i type ipconfig the ip address that it lists is wrong, and i have to call my isp to get it changed, hahaha, im still laughing about that, and 3 different people told me that before i got mad and realized they were all less inteligent than your average person off the street.

The obvious thing is to remove any metal which separates you and your router, really boosts connection strength and range
