Default Using Wireless AP with Wireless Router to extend range?

Hi, I have a netgear wireless router DG834G but the range is not good enough to cover my whole house, so I was advised to buy a wireless Access Point WG602 so I did. I tried to set this up not knowing that much about how to do it but I did a bit of reading and set the AP to act as a repeater.

I still doesn't work, if anything it seems to be stopping me from accessing the internet but still allowing me to access the wireless router connection.

What I was wondering is do I need two access points, one attached to the router and one set free somewhere in the house because currently I can't get this setup to work. And, if it is the case that I need two access points, it would be cheaper for me to exchange the AP that I just bought for another router the same as I already have and just have one router upstairs and one router downstairs and have two separate wireless networks so that as I walk up the stairs it disconnects from one network and then connects to the one with the strongest signal. Some people have told me this won't work though, and haven't explained why. Is there a problem with having two routers in the same phone line (different floors and different sockets but technically the same phone line)?

I know netgear sell mains plug range extenders but I can't find these in the UK, so how are people in the UK with big houses or thick walls increasing the ranges of their networks?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to PC Help Forum,

Hmmm...you should be able to log onto that AP as a repeater with no problems. Are you using WEP/WPA encryption or mac address filtering that may be causing this issue?

Hi, thanks for your reply,

I've tried turning WEP etc off while setting it all up and tried to follow the instructions from this link as closely as possible. The only thing different to what it says in this link is that I have the WG602v3 and I don't have the WG302. The Router I have is also wireless whereas in the diagram the AP is connected to a wired router.

OK, the confidence in your post inspired me to get the AP back out of its box and give things another go. I have named the SSID of both router and AP 'NETGEAR' and now when I refresh wireless networks only one NETGEAR appears so from this I am assuming they have joined forces. I can also back this up by saying that when I am in room that previously I would get no signal in I now get 'Excellent' signal so this must be coming from the AP.

Now here is the problem. When I am in the range of the ROUTER I can use the internet and everything is just fine, but when I am in the range of the AP although I get Excellent signal the actual Internet won't work, Firefox just says 'document contains no data' and IE says 'page cannot be displayed'.

So from what I can gather I somehow need to get the adsl to be sent from the ROUTER to the ACCESS POINT because at the moment it doesn't seem to be happening.

Also, something I don't understand - If I want to edit the AP's settings in a browser I have to change my TCP/IP settings to a fixed IP address, but I don't have to do this for the ROUTER, why is this, it's annoying that I can't have both settings pages up at once.

Thanks guys,
