Default [Answered] Help needed (for a friend)

I use a PC running XP and a laptop on Windows 98SE. They're both linked to a DLink router. The Pc is linked using a crossover cable, the laptop via wireless PCMIA card.

I want to be able to share PC folders with my laptop and I've read different things and have named both my laptop and my PC and called them the same workgroup. I've also put the folders I want to share on my PC into the shared folders bit and they appear on the My Network Places but my laptop isn't "seeing" my PC on it's Network Neighbourhood. I'm sure I read somewhere that there's a problem getting 98SE to "see" XP but I didn't see an answer of how to fix it.

Thanks

Make sure that you have at least one folder "shared" in each PC and that you are logging into both PCs with the same Username and Password - in the case of Win98, the network login that you are prompted for when booting. If you don't have a password set, always press "Enter" when the login box is displayed, never press "Esc" or you will not get access to the network. Also in Win98, in the Network Properties (right click Network Neighborhood and select Properties) make sure you clicked the button for "File and Printer Sharing" and ticked one or both options as appropriate.

Somethings you will need to do, on the XP machine go into windows explorer, click on tools, folder options, view. ?Scroll to the bottom and uncheck the "use simple file sharing".

This is a horrible feature and never seems to work.

on the hard drive right click the folder you want to share and select sharing and security and share it out.

More things to make sure u check, you will need the same user name and password on both, the firewall if u have sp2 must either be turned off or allow file sharing. ?if u have another fire wall piece of software the ip address of the windows 98 machine must be added to the trusted zone on the xp machine and vice a verca

if you've done all that and still can't browse, make sure u can pick each machines name from the other, and try mapping it using the net use command such as:
net use x: \\winxp\sharedfolder /persistent:yes

type that on the win 98 machine and it should map it if you can ping the machines name from the 98 machine

try those and see how u get on
