Dunno whether to get the pre-release version that is doing the rounds or wait for the "genuine article"....

Default Wait for the public release !

I would always wait for the public release it seems safer to me.

There is also the question of whether we have to pay for it or not!!!

Is that what the !?!?! at the article or the fact that we might have to pay for it. M$ are considering whether XP SP2 is going to be a feature release (upgrade) or just a service pack. Given that 80% of the SP is security related I cannot see how they can justify charging. They did release XP saying it was one of their most secure OS yet (not a difficult statement to underwrite I know).

They are also looking a little more relaxed on the pirating of it saying that it is better to have secure pirated versions out there than hundreds of thousands of non secure.

Oh my comment was definitely at the fact that M$ would look to charge people to update a piece of software that they had already bought...considering most of the fixes are there to patch up what M$ didn't do right in the first place ! :x
