Put simply it check you HD to see there are no errors if it finds any it fixes them. It safe as its built into windows.
Right click drive c: in explorer and choose properties then check disk click to fix errors it will then say it cant do it do you want to do it next boot say yes and it will then check your drive next time. It will sometimes do it on its own if you power off or have an error
