Default Help: safe mode

Hi,

I tried to re-boot my laptop (Dell inspiron 1300) into safe mode using the f8 key. My laptop wouldn't / couldn't go into safe mode for the following reason:

'We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.'

I then went into run-msconfig-then selected to boot up in safe mode however I now get the same message but i cannot even get into normall windows mode now as it keeps trying to boot up in safe mode but it cannot so i am going round in circles.

I have a file/folder on my computer that i have just recently changed and not managed to back up so i would like to avoid anything that might lose this folder?

Please help as I am writing a PhD thesis and really can't afford the time not to be writing at the moment!!!!!!

HELP HELP HELP!

Mark

Reboot and press f8 like you would if you wanted to go in to safe mode and choose start windows normally from the menu. Then go back in to msconfig and change it back so it doesn't boot always in to safe mode. That will at least get you out of that problem.

i might have misunderstood but are you saying it just automatically tries to boot in safe mode without giving you any options? I may be wrong but what i usually do is restart my computer as windows is loading then the next time i boot up it gives me the options to start with last known good configurations, safe mode etc....

If I boot up with this last known good configurations option will i lose any data that might be recent if the last known good configuration was say 1 or 2 weeks ago?

Sorry even when i select last known good configuration i still just keep getting directed back into the screen that you get when you press f8. A blue screen appears before it starts to boot windows up but it is so brief i cannot even make out any of the text that is shown (1sec or so)

Help help!

Thanks but i cannot get into windows in order to select normal boot up. I am stuck in an area before windows starts up.

Any other suggestions?
