Unhappy Wireless card

Hi,

I am trying to fit an old wireless card to my desktop. The wireless card is a sweex LW052 wireless lan pci card 54mbps. I do not have the installation cd or anything. I currently have a wireless system up and running in my house that i can use for any laptops, so I have a network key, secure password etc already set up and in working order. I have downloaded the driver i think is needed for the wireless card:

Setup_pcs_2k_sweex.exe for windows XP OS.

However I cannot seem to get my wireless card working/ computer to recognise I have one?
I have inserterted the card into one of the PCI? slots but i cannot seem to link this card with the computer.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Mark

Marfac,

This seems to be the right driver

Download Options

(You will need to either register a free account or watch "a series of ads" to download the driver)

Once that's done then on your PC click Start > Run and type in devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Under Network Adapters there should be a yellow ! next to your Sweex card. If there isn't then try clicking inside the 'tree' of devices then click Actions > Scan For Hardware Changes

Extract the .zip files and run the installer in the Win2kxp folder. It should install then. May require you to restart the PC.

If it doesn't show up in Device Manager then you need to check that you have inserted the card properly.

I have inserted the card fully and carefully i think but when i run the sweex utility program i still do not get a signal. I do not see my card / device in device manager. I have a ethernet card inserted and can see that, this was for dial up or cable to router. I have 3/4 othwer ports and have tried 2 of the ports but i still do not see my card, any other suggestions?

Cheers,
Mark

Have you taken the card out of an old PC or has this card been left in open air / a dusty environment?

Its possible that the card is damaged although I think even then "something" should show up in Device Manager.

You can easily break PCI cards by touching the gold contacts or by leaving it in a dusty or humid environment.

The only other possibility besides a damaged card is that you have a lot of devices connected to your PC which are consuming a lot of power. And there is no power left over to power up the Sweex card.

You can try unplugging any USB devices or 'extra' devices such as CD/DVD drives or perhaps hard drives if you have more than one.

The other option would be to try the card in another PC. If it works in the other PC then either your power supply can't power it or there is a problem with the motherboard.

After you connect the card and boot your computer XP should recognize a new device is installed and provide you the option of installing a driver for it. If you don't get the "New hardware detected" message when you boot up try opening your Control Panel and double click "New Hardware" and have it scan for any new hardware...if this fails, the card is not recognizable and installing device drivers will not solve the problem.

Another option you can consider is buying a USB Wireless LAN Adapter...I bought one from meritline.com for $12.00, new, and it works fine...comes with installation mini-CD and will work on win98SE, 2000, XP, Vista and Mac's.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think the card may be faulty and that is why it is not being detected bt the computer.
