Default Frequent freezes-help

Hello all,
my computer started to do frequent lock-ups, that I can't figure out what causes it...
I would be doing something/anything and suddenly the mouse stops being active, (i can still move it but it does nothing) and a few seconds later everything stops in time-frozen...even the smilies stop smiling
Few seconds later (on the average 20-60sec) it jumps back to action...
It is not overheating...
system: AMD athlon X2 6000+
Asus M3A78-EH LATEST BIOS
2 GO memory
Nvidia Gforce 7600 GT video card.
Windows XP SP 2
Just writing this letter, it locked up 5 times...
I really don't know where to look, it has 2 month old OS re-install...
I am not looking for you to repair my PC, I just need help in narrowing down probable cause...
Thanx for your time

You don't have to install IE8 but SP3 has extra security measures so I recommend you get it.

I posted here in OPERATING SYSTEMS because i have windows xp.
That doesn't mean that xp is the problem, i could not find a better place in the forum to post, (because i don't know if it is MB,CPU or what) so i started here.
Your insisting reply is a bit iritating if you consider there are countless SP2s that don't have this problem.
Do you know the cause of the freezes or not?
If not , don't bother me with your SP3

Wolfeymole was only trying to help. Of course we don't know the cause of your freezes, it could be any of a number of things. I agree with Wolfeymole in that you should upgrade to SP3. You should upgrade everything you can i.e. bios, drivers, OS, etc. If you still have a problem then we can help.

Yes there are lots of people happily running SP2 with no problems but they don't have your hardware AND software configuration.

Only thoughts for your problem with the information so far is either a failing HDD (a problem I am having at the moment) or malware. What anti-virus/spyware/adware and firewall do you have if any?

Did you reinstall the OS before or after the problem occurred and did you perform a FULL format at the time?
