Y'all have been a big help firstly.

My question is;
With xp are there duplicate processes that run concurrently to support the same function? When I check processes my commit charge is running at 453M/2459M, is this a normality or am I running too much, and if so where can afford to cut back? Also it states that I have 32 processes running now.

Hey there hydafl!

Please let us know which processes you are referring to.

XP, and actually, all windows versions, run many redundant/concurrent processes.

Might I gather you are speaking to the svchost?

One thing that can help us help you, if you will...

Please click on the PC Specs link in my signature below and follow those instructions. It will help all trying to help you, ok?

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for your patience

Well I have the specs in my profile and you should be able to see them.
Unfortunately I am very new to the boards and I am finding difficulty in asking the questions that I would like answers to. suffice to say would I gain any more speed in cutting back on unnecessary commit charges? It could be that I have a bloated anti-virus that seems to slow things down as well. Currently I am using the free version of Avast.
I am sure better questions will come with more experience.

And as always thanks.

What is xp 2600? When I reordered the system disc for this laptop it had originally been Xp media edition. So when I did the specs for this unit I see that I have xp2600, so are there any real differences? Finally is it better than what I started with?
I found some tweaks on Black Viper has anyone worked with the tweaks?

Firstly, 2600 refers to the build. 2600 is the final "release build" for XP.

Secondly, Black Viper is an excellent resource for tips and tweaks to get your XP install running smoother and faster.

I use BV's service tweaks, and found them to be great for stopping unnecessary stuff from loading at start up.

If you do use them print out the web page, and only do one at time marking them off on the list. Doing it this way you will not mess up as you can the re-enable the service.

Also Autoruns is a good tool to use when you gain more experience, as it is not a tool designed for beginners.

The main tab that you edit is called Logon, but be very carefull...

Okay I rechecked the system info and it reads media edition 2002 release, sp3. So this most likely a 32 bit system then correct?
