Hey everyone, having an issue with a funny older pc I am trying to fix for a friend. If any can offer their expert advice I would be very thankful!
So, here's the specs on this thing:
XP Home Edition sp2
Phoenix Award BIOS
2.53 GHz CPU
1 GB RAM
200 Wt power
Geforce 5700 AGP
It was a family computer that she wants converted to a pc for her office. I was originally just going to clean it up a bit, remove some stuff and install some stuff. After initial inspection I realized it was a mess. Lots of old apps trying to run things that aren't there, uninstalled hardware lacking drivers, etc. When I started to update drivers I found out that I was on a guest account, and the admin account password was long forgotten. Can't do anything. So we agreed to do a fresh format and install of XP. After trying to run setup I continually run into a restart hang, right when it finishes loading the setup files. I get to the menu where it asks to press enter to continue, then BAM!
Some wierd things happening on startup that I am unused to seeing:
BIOS does POST and list IDE drives, normal so far...
Then it does something called Fasttrack utility, and tells me no array is defined. WTF? It asks to press enter to run the utility or esc to continue boot. I do nothing and it boots normally to the XP screen.
Also, I noticed in the hardware manager that the RAID controller is not installed. Should it be? I cant do it in Windows due to admin rights denial.
Really strange and frustrating. I know I am probably a rook compared to you guys lol, but I have done many repairs and never seen these things. Made sure it wasn't overheating, tried an external USB CD ROM drive and tested existing CD ROM drives, tested RAM... not sure what to do next. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very appreciative! If any addl info is needed please let me know! Thank you all!
