Default "amd\64\update\update.exe" error

Hi,

I need to install windows service pack 2 on my Dell Optiplex Gx260 so i can install drivers for my wireless usb adaptor. I downloaded Service pack 2 64-bit from the windows website. My dell currently has service pack 1, so i thought it would be reasonably easy to install. when i double clicked the "self-extracting" exe. file. it said it was extracting the files to some folder, then on the last progression line thing it stopped and a message popped up that said: "amd\64\update\update.exe is not a valid win32 application." What should i do to install service pack 2?

cheers for all the help

Umm a few things, A. you didn't specify which version B. win32 would imply 32 bit, have you got a 32 bit operating system?
EDIT: when i say which version, i mean which version of windows***

Oh I have had a quick look into your pc model, looks more likely to be a 32 bit system, you SHOULD be able to tell by going to "my computer" then right clicking, then clicking on "properties", should display your system properties, but it looks from here like you need the 32 bit version of the service pack, (64 bit basically refers to the architecture of your processor, as in how much data it is capable of processing at any one time) hope this helps

hey, sorry for the late reply. so i downloaded the following file last night from microsoft support website: "WindowsServer2003-KB914961-SP2-x86-ENU". on the site it said it was the 32-bit version so i figured it'd work. i transferred the self-extracting file from this laptop to my dell optiplex and run the self-extracting file. i thought it was working as it didn't come up with the amd error, but instead it came up with the following error :

"The version of windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."

i was so guttered and i don't know what to do, please please help. i'll be forever grateful.

cheers
