Default Download speed?

I currently use two computers, one at my own house and one at my father's house a few days of the week. I noticed that my dad's downlaod and loading speeds are rediculously slow. While downloading a game to my own computer, my speed sits at 1.5 mb/s or higher, then while at my dad's place the same game downloads at 200kb/s or less... My game download will be at 5% after an hour or waiting at my dads, while at my house the game would've finished the download in less than 30 minutes.... Also youtube videos load at less than half the speed as at my house.

Before you ask, I have the EXACT internet setup at my dad's place as at my house. Cox highspeed internet with the exact same modem box and the same speed. No router at either house and there is no difference in speed with or without firewall turned on. My dad's house is in walking distance from mine. I have restored and reinstalled windows on my dad's computer and am completely baffled by this problem. Any help will be nice...

What version of windows do you each have? If it's xp then I would suggest trying some of the tools over at DSLReports. The one's that would probably help the most is the tweak test and the line quality test. To run the line quality test though it requires you to sign up. It's free though and definitely worth it.

Hello and welcome.

I think possibly the cause is Cox capping your downloads?

Please read this link as it mentions Cox and Comcast capping downloads.

Download Too Much, Lose Your Broadband

To help you resolve this issue I would ring Cox first and ask them if this is the speed issue,as you say while downloading the speed is slowed.

Get back to us after you have rang Cox please.

JB.

On a side note if you are downloading from P2P software usage you may wish to check out the Security Section and be checked for any malware that maybe part of your issue.

Perhaps your father is on a different Cox cable node to yours, and his has reached saturation point with to many users on it...

Boy, Arctos - that is a very valid point!

DSL is point to point - from your home to the phone company with no one else sharing the bandwidth.

Cable is a shared network - from your home to the cable company with any neighbors also enjoying cable Internet sharing the bandwidth

Different neighborhoods will have different cable Internet usage patterns depending on avg age of the residents, during or after school hours, school vacation, etc. In other words, the more people on line at the same time, the slower the connection speed available to your Dad's home

Thumbs down Re: Download speed?

Well i just ran an internet speed test with Speedtest.net and my results were disgusting. I ran the test at my house and at my dad's place and compared and almost laughed. Here's a screenshot of the results at my dad's house.

If you'd all kindly look to the left at the average speed for my ISP, it's a horrendous sight. At my place my speed was 2 and a half squares passed the average speed... Btw i have the same speed cox as my dad does I'm pretty sure. When setting up my internet on a restore, both the computers choose the same speed option by default when installing internet drivers etc. About to check out that site and see if they're capping my internet or something. Tell me what you guys think about the screenshot. How can it be THAT bad???
