Default unwelome program loaded at bootup

Having just purchased an IMac which has no modem I installed my old Winfax program on my wife's PC that runs Windows XP, and moved the data/fax modem from my old system (now given away) to hers. I carefully reinstalled Winfax selecting the option that it only is loaded manually, not during bootup. However, even so, it does load and until i kill it, when anyone phones our landline we get the fax tone.
I have been unable to figure out what loads this program, though I know its name.
Is there a way to determine what does this in an installed program or somewhere on the system and disable?
Yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled Winfax twice, each time being very careful to select the manual load option.

hi joecain

if you go to start > help and support , under pick a task select "tools"

in the next window in the tools section select "system configuration utility" > open system configuration utility then click on "startup"

this then brings up a list of the programs which start when you bootup the computer

find the winfax program in that list ,and untick the box ,
click on apply ,then ok

you will be prompted to restart the computer for the changes to take effect , restart the computer , upon reboot you will receive a notification window regarding system configuration changes , put a tick in the box and close/continue ,

this should prevent the application you deselected i.e. winfax from starting on boot up

Unhappy Re: unwelome program loaded at bootup

It turned out that the unwelcome process appears to have been loaded at logon, not bootup. Following the suggested procedure:

start->help and support->tools->system configuration utility->startup

did not find winfax on the startup list.

There are 4 users on the system, and only two of the users had winfax running when their screens were up. Secondly, I was advised to run
Autoruns v9.56:

Autoruns for Windows

I did so and found a winfax load in the logon list which activated the file

\windows\system32\WFXSNT40.exe

When I unchecked this file and rebooted, winfax was no longer running when i signed on.

However, I looked at the other users and it was running in the other one still! I ran Autoruns from this other user, but it had the same list with the winfax load unchecked as well, and in the whole huge number of lists no other reference to winfax
I looked at the directory and also saw alongside this file WFSVC.EXE.
I renamed this file, rebooted, and now winfax does not show in either of the users it did before.

However, there is now a new problem: Usually to send a fax all I had to do was to create a document like in Word Perfect, and then choose winfax for the printing output. Now that will not work!

Oh well!

One following note after I renamed WFSVC.EXE, I was able to send a fax, but had to first load the fax program before clicking on the print. Apparently this file has to do with automatically bringing up winfax when you print to winfax. The manual load is not a problem.
