Default accessing OS from partiton,

hi there, hope some one can shed some light on this issue..

im trying to help a family out with their IQON tesco PC they purchased many years ago...
the motherboard went pop so i managed to knock together a temp pc for them as i had some spare bits n bobs kicking about in the loft.

only problem now is the only thing original from their IQON pc is the hard drive. so it obviously will not boot up.

how can i access the partiton to restore windows XP back on the machine?
they have their windows license key but obviously no disc to use it with..
the normal F10 approach to load up the IQON restore options will not work here as its a different Motherboard and all that does with this board is give bootstrap options.

i have managed to get them up and running with a basic set up so they can access their saved docs off their old hard drive..

is their a start menu run command to access the old HD partition OS set up on boot up
or maybe able to download a boot disc to access the partition.

Hello Chuxsta

Welcome to PC Help Forum

Ok either get a new hard drive for this cobbled together box or tell them to get a new pc.

Personally I'd do the latter.

You can't install XP back to this box because, as you quite rightly pointed out, you have changed the board.

They need to get a new copy of XP and hook the old drive either as slave internally to pull their stuff off or via a USB adaptor.

thanks for the speedy reply..

i have already backed up their important stuff, i was just hoping there was some way of utilising their spent money on a licence key..

what you think the chances of MS issuing an XP home install disc for that key?

This is obviously an XP OEM that they had Chuxsta so please consider this from Microsoft.

Hardware changes

Generally, you may upgrade or replace all of the hardware components on the computer and maintain the license for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software, with the exception of an upgrade or replacement of the motherboard.

An upgrade of the motherboard is considered to result in a "new personal computer" to which Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer.

If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created and the license of new operating system software is required.

If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do NOT need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC.

Recovery Media

How should you reinstall the operating system on a machine from a direct OEM (for example Dell).

Use the recovery media received from the manufacturer because this is the software that is licensed to the PC by that manufacturer.

You cannot use any other OEM system builder media to reinstall the operating system, or any other version of media as these versions differ from the original OEM Windows license acquired from the manufacturer, and thus can't be substituted for that original license.

If you did not originally receive a backup copy of the software that can be used for reinstallation, or if you no longer have it, you will need to contact the original manufacturer and request replacement recovery media; You may use that media to reinstall the operating system on that machine.

Your welcome Chuxsta and just to quell any comments from anyone regarding this aspect from MS in that text.

If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do NOT need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC.
Let us agree that this machine is just as mentioned earlier, a temporary measure and not the persons original PC.
