What if I back up my important stuff first, music, docs, photos etc. from external drive onto DVD/RW's and then restore PC back to factory settings then format external drive? Is that ok to do?

If you have an external drive that is storage only then running a Back to Factory recovery will not affect it.
If you have program .exe's on the external drive you will need to re-install them.

But I have used the external drive to install software onto as well so it will have important stuff on PC (registry etc.) in order for them to run. So restoring PC will mess up software on external drive, so best uninstall all software on external drive first then restore PC??
I am doing this due to my external drive playing up yesterday see post http://www.pchelpforum.com/hard-driv...ard-drive.html |

These two threads are now merged Paul so let's keep these issues in this thread now please.
You may have put the executable files on the external but they will still install to C:\Program Files once run. The .exe file will still be on the external and will then need to be reinstalled to C:

No, when I ran the installer for whatever software it was, I told it to install it to I:Program Files, so the whole software is installed to I:Program Files (External Drive)

Do you have an operating system on this external drive?
