Default Missing win32 application

Hi, here I am with another problem. They never seem to end.

Some time ago, I was on my desktop computer and got an error message that said I needed to reinstall Windows. I did so, and haven't recovered since. My desktop has become so unstable that I have moved to my laptop as my main computer. Now it looks like I have the same problem here, and I don't understand how it can happen, and I'm worried about losing another computer.

Here is what happened. I went into Control Panel under Accessibility and tried to run the second option. As a result, I got an error message about not being able to find a system 32 application. See the attached screen print. I contacted CyberPowerpc, the manufacturer of my laptop, and got the following response:
__________________________________________________ _____________
The error message indicates that you are missing a system32 file. Missing system32 files can only be resolved by reinstalling Windows entirely. Please be aware that reinstalling Windows will totally wipe out what is on your hard drive.

How did you reinstall Windows Maureen, did you install from a Recovery partition or from the Windows disk?

Also have a read of this.

From my original disks. I lost so many files, and none of the backups I had made would restore. I contacted Dell for help, and they were able to recover some files, but not all. I was just heart sick.
Since then I've gotten smarter. I don't do backups anymore. I have a Western Digital external drive and I just copy my Documents and Settings over to it on a regular basis.

Hyperlinks open in Internet Explorer instead of in default browser or Help and Support Center
I went to the link you provided and from what I read, it isn't going to help me. I already have SP 3 loaded, and I have XP Pro, not Home. But the application I'm missing was in the list.

I thank God I found you guys. How in the world does an amateur like me ever find these things? And why isn't my manufacturer more up on these problems? (That's probably a stupid question.)

And how do I find if I am 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks so much.
Maureen

P.S. A couple of weeks ago, I started having problems connecting to the internet with my laptop. While I was waiting for help from CyberPowerpc on that issue, I switched to FireFox and had no more problems. So I uninstalled IE8 on both my computers, I thought.

Unfortunately words like Recovery and System Restore can be easily confused, this is not anyone's fault.

When I spoke of reinstalling from the Recovery Partition or the OEM disk I meant that this would take it back to Factory Condition, ie; New.

That fix from MS should install the missing .exe as stated.

Try it and let us know Maureen as I'm unsure of what Service Packs you have.

EDIT:

Have a read of this Maureen.

I edited my earlier posts to add that information. I have SP3 and XP Pro, which is why I thought the fix wouldn't work for me. How to I tell whether I'm 32 or 64 bit?

To save cross posting at the same time Maureen scroll down the forum to the section "What's going on" and click on view "Currently Active Visitors", this will then show you who's looking at what and replying to what.
