Default Windows media player taking over my laptop

Hi,
Something weird has happened to my laptop. Nearly all my programmes try to open in windows media player, which is preventing me doing anything to try and fix it. If I try and download a 'fix my pc' programme, it won't work, as it is trying to run on the media player. Sorry to be vague but it is hard to explain, other than whatever I try to run or open, Windows Media player opens and then says it can't run the requested programme??!!
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks

Do a system restore back a restore point before the problem started.

Here's Microsoft's KB article on using this correctly...

Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur
