Default high memory usage?

Ok, so I'm new to the forum and looking for some help even though I have some computer experience but not a lot. I have noticed lately that my sony vaio is running a little differently and by that I mean I can hear the fans (or what I think is the fans) progressively running faster and faster in stages pretty much. The computer isn't that old but it has a pentium 4 w/ hyperthreading and 180gb hard drive, 3 ghz processor and 1.5 gb of ram. I checked my task manager and it seems that even when I'm running a few programs or none that the longer I am on the computer that the more and more memory usage explorer.exe is using and I'm not sure why. I did a HiJackThis scan and saved the log and can upload that for someone a lot more knowledgeable than me to tell me if anything is wrong in the long and if I need to remove anything. The computer doesn't seem to be running as quick as it used to anymore & i'm not sure what to do? If i need to run anymore tests let me know & I would be glad to do so. Hopefully someone can help me out here please? =)

There is no malware in any of these logs I recognise. All I see is that you need to update your java..
