Default Can't load XP: ntoskrnl.exe missing/corrupted

got this message one day when I started my computer.
reboot with recovery disk made with ghost but the HDD with XP is not shown(I have 2 other drives and XP sits in it's own so my data is safe. other drives can be seen.) Then replaced with another HDD with XP and boot just fine so problem must be the HDD.
I still want to retrieve some info from program files such as bookmarks, password files, program settings but I think the HDD died. any suggestions? btw, when I pulled the HDD out and reconnect it through my external SATA port, I detected only a slow spin(it felt light vs heavy). the bad HDD is a Seagate Barracuda, 500GB and bought it new a few months ago. I'm using XP-64.
Any help is appreciated!

Hi,
I have a similar setup. OS on one drive and all data on the other.
I used knoppix live CD to recover some of the files from the failed OS drive I had.

That does sound like a very near dead drive, I don't think you'll have a lot of luck saving data from it.

First stop is Segate Support
and get the diags made for the drive and see what that makes of it. Second stop is Seagate again for a new drive as it will be under guarantee

If and when you send the drive back to Seagate/Maxtor, pay particular attention to the detailed drive packing instructions provided by them.
