Question Other ways to increase my comp's speed?

Okay so basically i have a somewhat old laptop, i think it will be 5 years next month with this one ( i have another newer one as well, long story) and i was wondering if there are any tricks to speeding up the general usage speed of my comp. It is an Inspiron 600M model with a 1.60 GHz and 1GB of RAM and running Windows XP

I am pleased with the speed of such an old laptop but i'd just like it to run a little faster. I already on a regular basis perform:

1) Defrags
2)MalwareBytes
3)CCleaner
4)Spybot S&D
5) AVG 8.5
6) delete un-used programs or files
7)try to run as few programs as possible at once.

any hidden tricks other than upgrading the hardware?

Hi Kanoley,

Welcome to PCHF.

Please navigate to the following link for GRC's Shields Up!. If you navigate to the following link:https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

You can perform several different tests to determine the stealthiness of your computer on the internet, vulnerability of open ports, among many other things.

It will allow you to correct any issues it finds, and make your computer more secure.

Go through the tests for:

File Sharing
Common Ports
All Service Ports
Messenger Spam
and Browser Headers

and allow the utility to fix anything it finds. Should you have any questions,or encounter issues, post back.

Additionally, this little gem comes to me direct from the Tech Team Leader. The following link: PC Pitstop: Free PC Scans and Tune-up Utilities

for PCPitstop provides a plethora of tune-up utilities you can run to check various things. I recommend them all

The main thing is what is running at startup check with the free startupcpl from
Mike Lin's Home Page

Remove anything you dont need or use dont have lots of malware/spyware/av running as they can slow it to a crawl just run one and use the others to scan weekly.

Remove all temp files and clean all temp files out of IE.
You can sometimes gain a little extra if you disable in the bios printer ports and serial ports if you dont use them but remember you have done it
