Default virus? or driver?

hi, currently have windows xp installed on my machine. always boot without the requirment of the windows disc.

earlier put my machine on standby, came back later switched it on and got a bluescreen.

pc restarted itself, the boot up seemed somehow different (cd drive normally spins and then quietens but failed to do anything this time)

then went to a black screen where it had some text (something about boot up, not sure what) with a rotating cursor - then nowt happened for ages. cancelled it with esc....pc then wanted system disc.

i went into the bios and changed boot order to all hdd, no luck

eventually decided to put windows disc in and boot from disc and it worked...phew

got an error report when i booted up - said something along the lines of a device or driver error or a virus.

how likely is this a device / driver error when all that happened was a boot up from standby? currently doing a virus scan, but any advice on how to prevent this happening would be very welcome. haven't yet tried restarting to see if this repeats.

Hi Spoodfed. Sounds like corrupred files. Perform the following:
Click Start/Run and type chkdsk and OK. If this does not correct the problem, perform this:
Click Start/Run and type sfc /scannow. Notice the space between the c and /. Have your installation disk available.
If you are bringing your pc out of standby by using a usb device (mouse) insure you have all of the hotfixes from Microsoft updates.
