DCiAdmin thanks for your help, you have helped me understand a cloudy issue. I looked underneath my 6400 and yup a small thin white service tag and a larger multi-coloured COA sticker with a product key number and Windows XP Home Edition printed clearly.

And on the 4100 the same but with Windows XP Professional.

Wolfemole - I don't understand why you're confused.
If you look .. I've been posting on this same subject on this forum (and a couple of others) about the same laptop for two and a half years.

Yes I know its a pity that we cant all be as smart as you or as efficient etc etc. I live in Scotland and my mum lives in Ireland and no my mum does not remember her password.

I just bought the C-bay drive and the 3-pin adaptor online and picked it up from the depot in Cambuslang.

Of course .. I know you personally would have preferred to load up the OS by osmosis or spin it yourself with your big head!

Bye.

Ali,

You can search Google for various ways into the system to obtain or change the Administrator password. I hope you understand why that sort of information cannot be provided here

Now that you have located the COA keys for both systems, did you still wish to format the 4100? And might you borrow an XP Pro CD from a friend, family member, or coworker? A borrowed CD is fine - it's the COA key that has to be yours btw, the COA is only good for the OS on the sticker - any other OS installation MUST be purchased with a retail COA key.

Also, please - no worries with Wolfey. He has the best interests of the members and site at heart. If you were to have a PC stolen from you - I can assure you that the thief would not receive assistance from us due to the diligence of members like Wolfey.

Hi.

Soz for losing it before .. the 4100 is on its way back to Ireland now. It has been a comedy of errors, like John Cleese in Clockwise.

About a year ago, my mother took the 4100 to a computer shop to get it fixed. They kept it for ages and didn't do anything constructive so she took it to another shop who also failed to remove the worm.

They said they couldn't do anything without a CD/DVD drive (it had a floppy drive). And when she got the darn thing home realised the power adaptor was missing. Both shops claimed they did not have it.

I removed the worm with Microsofts Malware removal tool. A few files appear to have changed directories but it seems to be working fine. Its a bit strange that it would allow me to run an exe file this time, its as if the permissions have changed but thats not possible.

Weird .. maybe it was the leprechauns.
