Evening Everyone,
Im trying to solve a problem for my brothers Xp machine, when he tries to shutdown(start-shutdown) the dialog box with the restart, shutdown options is taking anywhere between 2-3 minutes to appear.
Nothing is running in the background to cause these delays so im very puzzled as to what the cause could be, if anyone has any ideas could you please help?
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I would like you do the prework (link in my sig) and post the resulting logs back here. We can then have the security team check them to rule out or help remove any Malware that may be lurking, after which we can get the Techs involved if needed. Please be patient though as the team are very busy and with the additional constrictions of time zones they it take a little time. Thanks for your patience |

try hitting Crtl + Alt + Delete and look at the processes that are running in the background and see if one or more of them is using an unusually large amount of the of the CPU's usage %. More often then not, the system idle process should account for more than 90+% of the usage. Unless of course you are running some heavy duty programs.
So check it and report back cause sometimes you are unintentionally running programs in the background that you are unaware of and they will eat up all of your RAM's capacity so to speak. |

Thanks Ian, Kanoley that was one of the first things I went looking for but sadly all is calm, nothing is using more than it should be(only programs installed are MS Office, Itunes, and media player).
His PC is used primeraly for storing music/dvd's and general office duties, this is why im totally stumped! Andrew |

Has he ever ran a Defrag on this box?
If it's not hooked to the net we can discount Temp Internet files.
