When I open Skype all my desktop icons are highlighted and Skype window is very light and hard to read

First things first - have you made sure you are running the latest version of Skype? The link for version 4.1 (the latest) can be found here If you are already running 4.1, Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it?
