Can you be a bit more exact as to what the error message says please Hunter.

Yeah... I don't know **** about computers, but after the whole start-up screen. It tells me there is a non-system or disk error, and to select boot disk and press any key to continue... So I go in through my handy F1 setup and select my hard drive to boot from. It works, but I have to catch the setup screen.

Can you remember if the message said; "Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter"?
If so this could very well be notification of a dead or dying hard drive, alternatively it could be that if you have a floppy disk drive and a disk other than a windows boot disk is left in then you will get that message. I recommend that you back up all your personal stuff right now in case of imminent failure. Also make sure the hard drive is set as the first boot option in the bios by pressing F2, Del or whatever key it asks for on the initial screen to "Enter Setup". Look for the option Boot or it may come under Advanced and change the order, once done so press F10 to save the changes and exit the bios. Reboot and tell us if you are still getting the same error.

Yeah, the first thing I did when I got the boot error message was get my hard drive as the first boot option... I really should back my stuff up. Don't know if this even makes sense, but I first got the error after using my monitor to try and fix someone elses HP... It was the error message preventing them from doing anything, luckily I can get around it in this situation. But I'm in the middle of partitioning their drive and trying to reboot with 98. REALLY hard to do... ps, anyone with a better knowledge of how to extract files to the C: drive would be helpful.
I don't want to have to try this whole boot thing on my computer... = ( |

Can you tell us exactly what you have done so far to this other persons machine please.
Forget all about trying to boot XP with a 98 floppy disk.
