Default USB EXTERNAL HD... better than internal?

I need another HD and now I"m wondering if we need to buy internal at all anymore... for desktops. Can you now boot from an external? It seems so handy and easy to use. I would like to see a pro and con about this. I'll bet if I new where to go I could find one. I guess if you still can't boot fom one that would be a good enough reason.
Thanks
m

Yeah, you could consider a USB drive if you've got the spare USB and space away from the tower, good way to back up and take photos/videos to friends/famly. I've not got one my self but I've got 2 PC's and a lappy so all my important stuff if backed up (I always make sure I put pictures ect on more than one of them via USB stick.
