Hi,
I'm planning on moving to Windows Vista in a few months..and I'm not sure if it's alright that I uninstall my Windows XP home here in my PC and install it to my father's new laptop since his has no OS installed.
I bought my Windows XP home (OEM) last year.
Thank you

Hello Gerrygen, welcome back to PCHF!
So you are planning to upgrade your PC to vista, and effectively give your father your XP disk to use as his own? I don't think there is anything illegal with that, but that is by no means my area of expertize so I will mark your thread as open so someone who is more knowledgeable about Microsoft copyrights will see it. ![]() Regards, Smokeycheech

Gerry,
I believe OEM discs are good for a few installs. I'm still trying to get a definitive answer for you though. EDIT: Yes, they become unbootable after a few installs. Do you know offhand how many installs you have completed with your OEM disc? EDIT again: Maybe I lied. I'm getting conflicting information here. Another tech tells me they are good for as many installs as you can do. Still on the search

Your only problem will be that after installing the XP on the other PC because of the hardware changes the installation will need to be activated.
This may require you to ring Microsoft. Tell them the truth, whenever I've had to do it they have been very sympathetic with a positive result.

I see.
Right now I'm not using XP home and my laptop came with an installed Vista Home Premium so I don't get to install it in his laptop anymore. If I am to sell it..I could with my old computer instead. |
