Hi, I am having two problems with my computer, one minor, and one very major.
The minor problem (although it is very annoying) is with my broadband. Sometimes when I'm browsing the internet, even doing something as simple as a Google search, my browser will spend a very long time trying to load the next page, with nothing seemingly happening. Then the browser will stop loading and just present me with a blank page. If I then click on Refresh, the page will load instantly. It's like my internet connection is sometimes stopping then coming back for no reason. I have contacted my ISP (Virgin Media) about this, and they are convinced that my modem is fine, and that it must be my computer. I have done everything they have asked, such as traceroutes, pings, etc. and sent them the results, but they still say that it is not the modem.
The other, major problem I have is with the PC itself. It takes an unbelievably long time to boot up properly - to a point where the desktop and everything has loaded up and it is ready to go - taking a good 5 minutes or more. Once the PC is up and running, it is horribly slow. I mean slow as in I can click on the start menu and the icons will all start out as generic icons, and the PC will gradually load up and display the correct icons. Or I can double-click a folder on the desktop and it could be 15 seconds or more before it actually opens. I am using Zone Alarm firewall, always updated, and I have done full system scans (in both normal mode and safe mode) using AVG Free, Spybot, Ad-Aware, CCleaner and I always keep my definition files up to date. I also regularly do Windows updates and defrags and disk cleanups. I also have TuneUp Utilities 2006 installed, and I have ran every single program within that software, including registry cleaners. I have also looked at my startup processes, and my general processes, and killed as many as I could safely kill. There is nothing else I can think of doing, apart from reinstalling Windows XP, which I really don't want to have to do. My system specs are as follows:
Operating System - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
OS Service Pack - Service Pack 3

Thanks
Ian

Hello Ian, Welcome back to PCHF!
I am not sure what the issue is with your internet, but the slow start up is defiantly pointing to malware. I see that you have antispyware software on your PC, but would you please click on the Prework link in my signature and follow all the instructions, then post the logs back for us. We will then have one of our techs look at your results and then we can remove any hidden nasties before we sort your internet ![]() Best regards, Smokeycheech

I dont think this is a malware problem but lets check. Before you do this just switch you modem off for a minute and see it that helps...
Ok.We need to download ComboFix.exe. This will give me a better view to the files running and also hidden on your computer and also those in the registry..Please download from one of these webpages . http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. If it will not run rename Combofix to xxx.exe and run that. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.Recovery Console can be installed from your disc if you have Vista if you wish. Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures. ![]() Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message: ![]() Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt and a new HJT log in your next reply.

I tried running ComboFix, but when I ran it, it said "AVG is still running - please disable it". So in Windows Task Manager (and again in TuneUp 2006 Startup Manager) I tried to disable all of the AVG processes:
avgcsrvx avgemc avgnsx avgrsx avgwdsvc but they kept restarting immediately. There was no option to cancel in ComboFix so I clicked the X to close the box, hoping that would cancel. But then it said "AVG is still running - continue at your own risk". So I displayed the start-up processes in Windows Task Manager/Tune Up 2006, and disabled the only AVG one (AVG tray), then restarted the computer before ComboFix could do anything. Once the computer restarted, all of those AVG processes were running again. So now I don't want to run ComboFix until I can get AVG to behave, and I don't really want to uninstall AVG unless I have to. Also, when I start my computer up now and it gets to the desktop, it beeps once or twice like it does when ComboFix is running, which is a bit strange. Any ideas what I should do next? |

Just ignore your AV and run Combofix in safe mode.
