Default boot from cd

on a different computer, i am trying to do a complete re-install of win xp pro. when i put in the disc and reboot, i know that its supposed to say something like press any key to boot from disc but it doesn't it just brings me to the list of OS's to choose. the boot sequence is set to cd first already.

so now that the above didn't work, i load the current win xp pro and try to install from there. but after it says the usual stuff of collecting info and such and the pc reboots, it dosn't give me any options to format the hdd during setup and i want to format it and do a fresh install because besides it having spyware and viruses it has both xp pro and 2000 pro which i dont want.

ive been trying to do a fresh install for like the past week and im just getting tired of it.

does the pc have more than one cd/dvd drive ? if so make sure that the correct one is set to boot first ,if it is set correctly and not booting try reseting the bios to the defaults then change the boot sequence back to the cd/dvd drive and try again , before you format wait a little time and let the security analysts on this forum talk you through a few processes that will get rid of the viruses and have your pc running normally again

it does have a cd drive and a dvd drive. in the boot sequence, the only options are to boot from the cd drive, hdd, network, and something else but the cd drive is always listed in first.

i will, however, try resetting them just to see.

as far as clearing the pc of viruses and such, id rather not waste my time and anybody elses for that matter. there is nothing there to back up anyway besides some unimportant documents and a few pics.

If you wqnt to get remove all of the operating systems on the computer, use Darik's Boot And Nuke (DBAN).

Main Page: Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe

Manuals: DBAN Documentation | Darik's Boot And Nuke

It will take a little time to run, over an hour or more depending on the cpu and harddrive size you have.

Here's a warning, back up any photos music files etc. before you start, as there is no chance of recovery once you have run DBAN...

I see the problem here.

You say you have both a cd-rom drive and a dvd-rom drive right?

If you select the CD drive as bootable, you also have to set which one in another menu. I wouldn't be surprised if its trying to boot from the other empty drive.

To be sure, see if putting the cd in the other drive does allow you to boot/install xp from.

If you want to install it from the cd-drive, then we can look into the confirugation option for that, but for now, I'd like to ask you if putting the cd in the other drive does ask you to boot from the cd.

ive already tried putting the disc into both drives and nothing happens. after it reboots and asks me which partition to install it in, it dosen't give me an option to format the whole hdd, but it does give me an option to replace my current xp pro install. that would be great but even after re-installing xp pro, win2000 pro remains unchanged and still containing viruses so they just spread over to xp again.

i will look into "DBAN" but it will probably take a good while. the pc im trying to fix is an xps t500, pentium III @ 500 mhz, 40 gb hdd.

If it asks for a partition to install it into, then you are booting from the cd, isnt it?

If you install Windows XP, the virus on the 2000 will not harm the XP unless you open a file on the XP that has been infected by the 2000 install. Also if you boot to 2000 only then the files on the XP install can become infected.

Also: do you have a SATA RAID harddrive in your computer that you possibly need drivers for to load during the install? That could lead to not being able to partition your harddrive and install windows.
