Hi,
Installed OpenSuse 11.0 Linux on dual boot with Windows XP. Linux boots fine (with some issues not pertinent here). But, my Windows partition will not boot without ATW_Windows_XP_SP2_Boot_CD.
I set up my bios to boot first from the CD so I can boot OK. How can restore what's on ATW_Windows_XP_SP2_Boot_CD to the c: drive so I can do away with the CD?
Thanks
Alan

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum..
You need to repair XP boot sector. How to Repair the Boot Sector: If XP won't start it may be due to a damaged boot sector or a missing or corrupt ntldr or ntdetect.com files. To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. Boot with the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console. At the Command Prompt type the following (where "X" is your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C: COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C: To repair a damaged Boot Sector at the command prompt type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Then answer "Y"

Thanks, I have now tried everything. I removed the OpenSuse 11.0 partition, removed GRUB, and reinstalled the boot sector using Windows XP fixmbr and fixboot. Still, the machine will not boot unless I have a boot CD with ATW_Windows_XP_SP2_Boot_CD in the drive, and have the machine boot first to the CD drive.
I have a Seagate SATA3500630AS 500GB drive as my C: drive under Windows XP. It booted just fine before my little experiment with OpenSuse. I no longer have any remnants of Linux left (I don't think), but the problem persists. Any ideas? |

Hey Alan are you able to connect the hard drive to another computer as a slave and remove any data you wish to save and possibly then reinstall windows?

I'm sure I can do that, but that's my LAST resort. The system is working just fine using ATW_Windows_XP_SP2_Boot_CD.ISO to boot. I tried reinstalling the MBR through the Windows XP disk, using fixmbr and fixboot - still no dice. I would like to transfer what's on the CD to the hard drive (I have no idea what's on the CD - it shows that its fully used but no files).
