Default Where Is Registry at normally?

I believe my Registry is now located on my Desktop and I would like to get it back to where it is supposed to be.

I had a problem connecting with Norton Antivirus (to activate) and with connecting with an Earthlink (Kasperky) antivirus program to update. I called Earthlink and the representative told me I had to uninstall the Earthlink antivirus program and then remove some items in the Registry relating to this Earthlink antivirus program. I followed the directions but when I got into the process, I didn't see these Earthlink antivirus items in the registry. I wasn't sure how to cancel the process but I thought I just closed the process and then I saw that my registry is now on my desktop. Under "properties," the location is listed as the desktop so I believe it is not just copied to the desktop. The file size is listed as 93 MB.

Listed below are the steps I took. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Earthlink Rep: To uninstall the Earthlink Protection Control Center(PCC) --> Start-->Run type "appwiz.cpl" on the text field available and click on Ok. A window will display the programs available on your computer, in there select Protection Control Center(PCC) and click on Remove button to uninstall Protection Control Center(PCC). Following are the steps to remove PCC from the registry.

WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Editing the Registry should only be done by experienced users or technicians. Earthlink cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of the Registry Editor can be solved. Edit the registry at your own risk and always back it up prior to making any changes.

1. From the Start menu, choose Run.
2. In the Open field, type regedit.
3. Click the OK button.
4. From the Registry menu, choose Export Registry File.
5. Click the down arrow on the Save in drop-down list and choose Desktop.
6. In the File name field, type ELN.
7. Click the All radio button in the Export range area.
8. Click the Save button.
9. Delete the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\ProtectionService
As I mentioned earlier, I couldn't find the item listed in number 9. I thought I stopped the process, but it looks like my whole registry may have been exported to the desktop. I am not have any computer problems associated with this move (no problems that I know of). I would just like to get it off the desktop and back to a proper location.

Thank you,

Dave

Default Re: Where Is Registry at normally?

Open regedit from the Run prompt.

Then try clicking Edit > Find > Type in ProtectionService and see if it finds anything.

If it doesn't find the key then it isn't there.

You may have backed up the registry to your Desktop but you have not moved it. You can delete the registry backup from your desktop with no ill effects.
