Unhappy Windows stops responding after a few seconds.

I dont know where to post this, so here it goes. My laptop suddenly stopped working, when I turn it on it starts normally, all the usual programs start opening but after a few seconds the cursor shows the sign of waiting, bt it waits forever and if I click on anything, to open or close a program or page or even to turn the laptop off, it doesnt responds anymore and looks like frozen only for the waiting sign of the cursor, so I have to turn the laptop off manually and of course I cant do the prework, and I even tried to do some troubleshooting in safe mode but with no luck, can anyone help? I suspect it has something to do with my husband, who doesnt know much about computers, watching some films online the last time the laptop worked...

Hi,

When you say this:
I even tried to do some troubleshooting in safe mode but with no luck
Did it include using System Restore to "rewind" past today/yesterday?

Well, I have to admit that system restore was off but just because a few days before I posted here another problem I was having with Skype and while performing Prework, I disabled it and that thread was not resolved yet, so it was still turned off, I hope there is still an easy solution...

If you have the installation disk then go for a non-destructive repair install.

I dont have the installation disk even though I bought the laptop new a year ago and the documentation says I can recover from the hard disk, but the laptop was not working at all some months ago and I took it to where I bought it, they fixed it, but a few days ago when I was trying to fix it myself, I tried a recovery and I got a message saying it was not found on my hard disk, so I really dont know what to do, other than take it to them again, but they take a long time to fix it and I would prefer to be able to use it as quick as possible, thas why I came here...

Sorry but no amount of help here will fix this for you without the install disk (or AN install disk). When you put the laptop in for repair, they removed the "recovery partition" which is placed on the hard drive in case this ever happens.

The last thing I can suggest is for you to press F8 repeatedly on boot - when you get to the "safe mode" menu, select "last known good configuration"..good luck.

Thanks Hengis, I will try what you told me and as an alternative I have a friend who has an installation disk and he has offered it to me, anyway why they would remove the recovery partition? I can still go to them to fix this, I think...anyway, thanks a lot
