Default hungapp error - crashes and freezes Win XP

OS: Windows XP SP2

Over the last few days, I have had many instances where internet explorer (version 8) would freeze up and crash and would get the error message (szAppName:iexplore.exe szApp ver: 8.0 szModName: hungapp ...etc.). Thought it was just an internet explorer issue, so I tried re-installing IE but it still happened. Also happened on other apps such as McAfee, Taskmanager, and Firefox. Here's what I have tried so far ...

1. I ran 4 different anti-virus/spyware scans (Mcafee, Vipre, SAS,onecare.live.com) - they all came up clean
2. Did a quick clean and disk defragmenter
3. Ran a chkdsk /r
4. Did a START-Run-cmd.exe-sfc.exe/scannow
5. Reset all IE settings to default
6. Turned on compatibility view in IE
7. Tried to do system restore but no matter what date/time I chose, it told me it was unable to restore to that point (tried all points)
8. Made sure I had all the Windows Updates - I did
9. Start-run-eventvwr.msc shows "application hang"

I am not sure what else to do. I do notice that it is more likely to not crash while on the internet if I wait until the page is completely loaded (pics, ads and all) before touching or doing anything. If even one picture hasn't loaded yet and I try to scroll down or something ... it will usually crash.

Please help! Thanks

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum. The problem is with Internet Explorer 8. In case you didn't know, it is still in BETA form. Bugs still exist, as I am experimenting with it and trying to find all the bugs in it and report to Microsoft what I discover. So far, your problem is what I have experienced. It's not Windows, it's IE 8 BETA. I would recommend reverting back to IE 7 or use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, although I would NOT recommend Google Chrome.

By the way, the bug you get is executed when you IE 8. IE 8 currently has NO support for any software. So when you run IE 8, you are running programs as well, so IE 8 will detect the "NO_COMPATIBILITY =NULL" function and you will get the error message. Give IE 8 some more time before trying it again. I would say 3 months is good...

We switched to Firefox 2 days ago and still have the exact same problem. Only now the error says firefox.exe hungapp instead of iexplore.exe hungapp. We also have the problem happen on other applications not on the internet such as mcafee and task manager.

Let's try two things:

1. Some serious houskeeping - download:

CCleaner from CCleaner - Download

Then install.

I suggest when asked untick all the options apart from the top one

CCleaner:

Under the Cleaner section: select “Run Cleaner”

Under the Registry section: select “Scan for Issues”

(when asked about registry “Backup” save & then accept where it saves it to.)
then “Fix Selected Issues”

Do the Registry option again..(and again until no issues found)

2. Follow the PreWork instructions in the link below.

We await your reply........................
