Question Probelms After Installing RAM

Hi, am hoping someone can help?

Having realised I only had 256MB on my PC, I used Crucial UK to identify and recommend compatable additional RAM. I purchased an additional 1GB, and installed it yesterday. However, since doing so, I am having problems. I keep getting the 'Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close' messages (not ONLY Internet Explorer, but most have been). This is happening alot. I have also tried to download a couple of things since, and neither time have been successful - I can't remember the error message, but it doesn't seem to like it.

Any ideas why I have caused these problems by adding this memory, and more importantly, any suggestions that may help me to fix it? I'm worried I've gone and mucked it all up.

Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

Firstly did you remove the 256 mb completly then add the 1 gig?

Please could you post:How to post your computer specifications.

Could you post make and model number of the RAM you installed and if possible the results of Crucial scanner.

Could you enter BIOS/Setup and load defaults and see what happens.

I have marked your thread as "Open" to receive further help from our great team and members.

Jelly Bean.

hi m8 i ran a scan on crucial and found it gave me the wrong capacity size personaly i think that there is something wrong with the scanner it's self , it has possibly given you the wrong info my suggestion would be is to get your board make and number and go directly to the manufacturesrs site to see what amount of ram it will run, hers a report on my board that crucial scan gave me lol

Jelly Bean agrees: I agree the scanner is not always correct.

Hello Jelly Bean.

I took the 256mb out, put the 1gb where that had been, and then put the 256mb in the second slot.

I have just copied in some details of my PC into my User CP profile thing.

Results from Crucial UK (as of now..) are as follows:

Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1.25GB
Available Memory Slots: 0
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
CPU Family: AMD Athlon(tm) XP Model 8, Stepping 1
CPU Speed: 1262 MHz Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

On the packet to what I have installed it says: 1GB 164-PIN UNBUFF DIMM 128MX64 DDR PC2700.

What do I need to do for the BIOS/Setup thing you suggest?

Hi bigbadjohn!

Hmmm serves me right for being too presumptious that it would be right probably! Start up and logging in etc are all much quicker since, but I'd rather they were back to being painfully slow and not have this problem!

Remove the 256 mb stick,it appears your computer doesnt support mixed RAM modules.

Then restart the computer.

To enter BIOS restart the machine and it should say on the screen "Press ? to enter setup" this could be Del,F1,F2 or another.

However I think if you remove that 256 mb you should find your good to go.

Right, I have removed the 256mb stick. On starting up my PC afterwards, the blue screen appeared with the message:
'Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is NTFS
One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency'
and then carried out a scan.

Would you expect it to do this? The same thing happened yesterday after installing the new memory - but not straight away on restarting the computer. It was after about 10 minutes of it being on...my PC restarted itself and then that blue screen came up.

Am now waiting to see if I get any more little error messages now having removed the 256mb...fingers crossed...
