this morning i booted my computer and it took longer than usual
i get to the password prompt screen and type it in, and while it says "loading your personal settings" a box pops up and says that it can't load my profile
then it loads to the point where i have a blue screen and a very small box that has a red circle in the middle with a white X in it, and under it a smaller rectangular box with OK in it
i have no choice but to click OK and it logs me off
i've tried numerous reboots and Safe Mode doesn't appear to be working for some reason
does anyone have ANY idea what the problem might be? or what i should do?
i'm fair experienced with computers and i was on the computer last night perfectly fine
i didn't go to any weird sights or download anything
the only thing i did that i could think of was defragmenting my hard drive
any help out there? i'm sort of getting frustrated
let me know if there is any other information i should post
thanks a lot for any help
-Alex

What defrag program did you use? I know (in my case) Diskeeper has messed up my pc twice.. But it was able to boot just never released my ram. SO I had to do a fresh install of Windows.
Try going back into safe mode. (wait for a couple minutes before giving up ont it!) Did you do a bootime defrag? As this option should never be used as it can mess up your pc if you try to defrag the MFT (master file table) I will await your answer to go any further.

I'd recommend doing a last known good config, keep pressing F8 during boot up to pick the option.

Yes last known good config is a good bet.
Also, I would try running Safe Mode with command prompt and seeing if this command will run: sfc /scannow This should repair any missing or corrupt system files, which it looks like you have. You need to have a Windows XP CD in the drive for it to work. Its possible that you used some sort of inferior defrag program that has moved, compressed or otherwise damaged some critical system files. a System File Check (sfc) will restore those files (hopefully) if you can get it to run. Also, as soon as you logon in either normal Windows or Safe Mode see if you can press Ctrl + Alt + Del Then go to New Task (Run)... And try typing in explorer > OK Although I doubt that will work, its better to try typing in: CMD > OK then in the command prompt type in sfc /scannow If none of this works then I suggest making a new partition in the hard drive so that you can access this broken Windows install and backup any important files, then format the whole drive with a fresh XP install (without partitions, they bad) Good Luck (The > mean 'click', not to type the '>' symbol) |
