my older dell insperion e1705 laptop with win xp media center . recently developed a virus.went through and got rid of what files i thought it was and security pop ups stopped showed clean and virus free with scan. accidently emptied recycle bin and now my windows wont log in it goes through all the motions logs then logs right back out does the same if i try safe mode. tried to repair the windows version on my laptop goes through the whole half hour or more then gives me a message saying this----ngen.exe-entrypoint not found-----
the procedure entry point getrequestedruntimeversion(< all together like one word) could not be located in the dynamic link library mscoree.dll----end of message. anyway i could reformat but dont want to lose some pictures and budget info on there any way to get in????? help please

Hi
to PCHF when you doing the repair install did you start the Dell cd in in windows? If i'm right you did. Try booting off the Dell CD and then do the repair install it should work then.

dont have a dell restore disc. cannot find one either. its a second hand puter. all i have is the win xp os disc with key . please some one help. tried booting in all the dif safe modes . ran the xp disc till it found the install tried repairing but still did not fix it. i can reformat like i said but dont wanna lose my files. wifey put a bunch of pics on there and budget and bill info no back up. will boot up to a linux knopix std disc and i found the files i want to save but thumb drive isnt recognized to move files please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would remove the hard drive and fit it as a slave to another computer and remove the files then replace back into origonal computer and format.
Or use an external hard drive caddy to convert the internal hard drive to an external.
