Hello there,
I'm new to this forum so im not entirely sure im posting this in the right place but i was
basically wondering if anyone could shed some light on the PC problem which has been
plaguing me for about 6months now in a variety of different forms.
firstly my PC spec:
Motherboard - XFX nForce 790i Ultra 3 way sli(intel socket 775)
CPU - Intel Core2 Quad Q9450 2.66ghz 12MB L2 1333Mhz
Ram - corsair Twinx 2GB DDR3 1333mhz (times 2)
Graphics Card - Leadtek Nvidia 280GTX
Harddrive - Hitachi Deskstar 500gig
PSU - corsair 650W
OS - Windows XP Pro
Mouse - Razer Copperhead
Keyboard - Logitech G15 (ver2)
DVD - Liteon DVD Writer
Basically i have an extremely sporadic issue with PC freezes... Its so unpredictable im
having a lot of trouble narrowing it down as to what is causing it so im hoping someone may
of seen this before and may be able to help me. What happens is, seemingly at random,
playing games, idling, just general browsing, the computer will freeze up, it wont blue
screen, it just freezes and the audio loops about a split second of audio over and over and
it never comes out of this without resetting the PC. This can happen within the time frame
of anything of about 30seconds to 12hours however sometimes it gets into a pattern of
crashing in the same way over and over again becoming completely unusable.
The computer has gone through 2 harddrives already, both Seagate 500gb's, identical which
were brought for a raid set up originally but never installed that way due to the crashes.
its now running on a Hitachi deskstar 500gb but the problem continues and i don't wanna
loose another harddrive to it. I also installed the Deskstar on a different sata port just
incase the port i was using before was broken in some way but this didnt stop the crashes
either.
I originally used Vista and thought that may of been the problem so reverted back to XP but
the problem persists.
The problem seemed to start occurring soon after buying a Nvidia 8800 gfx card but i
returned the card and it was tested and was apparently fine, i have since given this card
to a friend and he has run it happily on his with no problem so it wasn't that either...
I have tried removing one of the sticks of ram to see if its a ram issue but it appears the
problem continues. I don't have any other DDR3 ram to test if its an issue with both sticks
of ram.
I ran a stress test on all parts of the computer last night and no errors were found with
any parts and it completed the test completely fine.
I then removed all none essenitals from the computer, Disconnected the DVD writer, changed
the keyboard and mouse to much crappier ones and still the computer crashes.
I am using all the lastest drivers for the mobo and graphics card. Im using onboard sound
but i have disabled this in the past and the crash still happened.
Basically ive pretty much ruled out the hard drive. Semi ruled out the graphics card, but
am still completely confused as to what it could be.
Im honestly at a loss of what to do with it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello CB and welcome to PCHelpForum.
Gosh this could a be a few things that can cause this. Lets see if we can rule out a few things. You went from XP to Vista then back to XP.Did you perform a BIOS update? Ok download and run: http://www.pchelpforum.com/memory/58...nload-run.html SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer You say the new GPU you now gave away also had issuse of some kind? Some times an uninstall of the old GPU drivers or turning of onboard graphics can help this sort of issue. Hardware drivers can become corrupt. Open command prompt and copy and paste in sfc scannow and pop in the XP CD and hit enter on your keyboard. Was the Vista and the XP genuine bought instillation disks or supplied with a new computer? Ok open command prompt and copy and paste in this command chkdsk /r and hit enter on your keyboard. If you get cannot run at this time would you like to schedule type Y and hit enter then restart your computer and let chkdsk /r run. See how that goes form me please and post results. JB.

Ok firstly, thanks Jellybean for replying so promptly
Is much appriatiated. To answer your questions, I installed Vista on my first Harddrive (seagate 500gb), this suffered from the freezing and i thought it may of been the harddrive so i installed vista again on my second seagate harddrive but it continued to suffer from the same freezing. The first drive died from the random freezing and became completely unusable. When i installed XP it was an entirely new install and on an entirely new harddrive (the hitachi deskstar 500gb) I installed one bios update during this entire process on the first harddrive, but it made the computer constantly blue screen so i had to roll back. I downloaded the 2 programs you asked me to and used them both, here are the results. Memtest86+ - Passed 100% Speedfan - Computer Idling GPU - 44 System - 86 CPU - 35 AUX - 36 HD - 34 Core0 - 44 Core1 - 45 Core2 - 41 Core3 - 44 After Dawn Of War 2 GPU - 51 System - 92 CPU - 46 AUX - 34 HD - 29 Core0 - 52 Core1 - 50 Core2 - 47 Core3 - 51 The system Temp definatly concerns me but to be entirely honest im not sure which part that is refering too, i can also not find this temp on my Nvidia temp monitors or the bios ones.. maybe you can shed some light on that? I should also mention, after we play tested dawn of war 2, the computer promptly froze just after recording those results. however it is not always the case that it freezes just after playing games. sfc /scannow The scan completed and nothing changed. chkdsk /r Windows Finished Checking the disk, Disk Clean message displayed. Anything there of any help?

One question when you installed either OS did you press F6 during setup?
Your temps appear fine, your system temp is an average temp of the whole system.A little warm on your CPU during game play but not overly hot. Are you able to do this for me please: http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-x...eath-here.html
