Windows XP/2000 - hd problem?missing ntoskrnl.exe posted in the Operating Systems forums; windows wouldnt boot due to missing file. reformatted hd,deleted partitions,installed xp and pc booted for several days, then again, error message at boot : windows can not start. missing windows ...

Default hd problem?missing ntoskrnl.exe
windows wouldnt boot due to missing file. reformatted hd,deleted partitions,installed xp and pc booted for several days, then again, error message at boot : windows can not start. missing windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. i then went into recovery console and expanded file... pc booted fine for several days, then again this am, same thing, missing file. could this be a sign the hard drive is going out?

Hello

Just to check the HDD
Go toASTRA - Advanced Sysinfo Tool - Free Download
and download SMARTUDM.exe.
Put it on a bootable floppy or USB thumbrive and run it (pure DOS)
Generate the report (by pressing R at the end), open it with Notepad, and post it here.

I think you did something wrong.
At the end of the screens sequence, when smartudm asks for a report print, you must press "R".
Then you right click on the generated .rpt file, and chose open with notepad.
You save the open file as Report.txt, and then you post it here.

I think you did something wrong-or I didn't explained correclty (most likely)
At the end of the screens sequence, when smartudm asks for a report print, you must press "R".
Then you right click on the generated .rpt file, and chose open with notepad.
You save the open file as Report.txt, and then you post it here.

One should be able to actually read the report -no weird characters

Hey, I dunno if you have already fixed the problem, but i had that for like the past 3 days or something and i fixed it 2day. lots of people gave different ways to fix it, so im gonna post all the ones i used. ill tell u which 1 worked 4 me.

ok, for all of these, you will need the windows xp install disk that most likely came with your computer.

Getting Into Recovery Console:
Okay to get into recovery console:
1. Insert Windows Xp Install disk into your CD drive.
2. Restart your computer, and enter the BIOS settings.
3. Change your boot sequence so that your computer will boot from a CD. For info on how to do that, go to this page: How to Set BIOS to Boot from CDROM - www.hiren.info
4. Restart your computer once again.
5. When you get to a screen that says: Press any key to boot from disk (or sumfin similar), press any key on your keyboard.
6. The Windows XP Install will load, and you will get to a screen with three options. Press 'r' on your keyboard to enter the Recovery Console.
7. The Windows partitions or something will be shown on the screen. Choose the one that you use (usuall 1.)
8. Type in the administrator password. If there is no password, simply leave it blank and press enter.
9. Congratulations, you have successfully run Recovery Console from your Windows XP Install Disk.

The One That Worked For Me:
ok, the solution that worked for me (remove all quotation marks when told to type something into recovery console.)

1. In Recovery Console, type "copy*space here*d:\i386\Driver.cab*space here*c:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe/v" (without quotation marks and the *space here* things. They only to show that there is a space there, as it can be confusing sometimes.)
Note: D: is the letter of your CD drive. If D: is not the letter of your CD drive, simply change it to the correct letter.
2. Press "Enter"
3. Reboot your computer, and hopefully it will work.

I will post the other solutions in my next post, as i may have to go soon and dont want to lose all this lolz.
