Default hp 4850 scanner

I purchased a HP 4850 flat bed scanner about 3 years ago, the scanner has been very good, and worked great untill I installed an HP 4315 all in one printer. I began to have problems with bothe units. After many emails to HP it was determined that they were in conflict with each other, so I removed both the 4850 scanner, 4315 printer, re-installed the 4315 printer after a re-boot, it worked OK for a day or two then went bad, since it was only 4 months old HP replaced the printer, it worked OK. I re-inatll the 4850 scanner, at the appropriate time, then I connected the scanner, it was never recognized by the computer. I removed the scanner and the printer, re-booted, re-installed the scanner still does not work, the computer does not recognize the scanner. So, I installed the scanner on my lap top, (XP Home) works Great. I also installed it on one of my other computers running Windows 2000 Pro, it also works great on that computer, I removed and installed it again on my main computer which is Windows XP Pro. It did work great on the xP Pro for three years. before this problem. The scanner input to the compouer is via USB. I have other devices connected to the same USB with no problems together or seperate.

Any suggestions like registering a dll or something crazy that I am overlooking. HP even suggested that I through away the 8450 flat bed scanner and use the scanner with the 4315 all in one, my answer to that was how am I going to scan slides and film strips with the 4315 printer? No reply.

My main computer is self assembled with an AthlonXP CPU, 1.9MHz, 1.5G of RAM, ABOUT 400GB of disc space in three drives. Windows XP Pro OS

Off the top of my head I'd say when you install the the All-in-One don't install the scanner bits. (Custom Install)

I'm not familiar with your model but I've seen the option available on other kit.
